Bhutan opened its doors to international tourism in 1974. Since then, significant development has taken place in the tourism industry. Today, tourism is the second biggest revenue earner for the government. That said Bhutan follows a cautious tourism policy of High Value Low Impact mainly to prevent mass tourism fearing its adverse impacts on its age-old traditions and culture and pristine environment. Tourism revenue constitutes over a quarter of Bhutan’s GDP. The industry is also a major employer with over 25,000 Bhutanese working in the various ancillary subsectors of the industry.
