Bhutan is a hydropower rich country, with the potential of producing 30,000MW of electricity. At present, the government plans to harness 10,000MW of power by 2020. Hydropower is the main source of revenue for the government. The hydropower projects in Bhutan are jointly developed by Bhutan and India, and most of the surplus power is exported to India. It’s a win-win situation for the two neighboring countries. The GDP contribution of hydropower hovers around 20% and after the completing of the 10,000MW projects by 2020, this is expected to drastically increase.
